What you'll need

  • Paper
  • A pencil
  • An eraser
  • Grey, cream and pink markers or crayons

Make it, step by step

Follow the pictures — one fold at a time.

  1. 1 Step one: a big circle for the koala's head.

Start with a big circle for the head. Koalas have round, friendly faces, so keep it nice and circular. Draw it lightly.

  2. 2 Step two: an oval body added below the head.

Add an oval just below for the body, tucked under the head. Koalas are round and cuddly, so keep the body chubby.

  3. 3 Step three: two big fuzzy ears added to the sides of the head.

Draw two big fuzzy ears on the sides of the head. Make the edges bumpy and fluffy — those giant ears are a koala's best feature!

  4. 4 Step four: a big oval nose added to the centre of the face.

Add a big oval nose in the middle of the face. That large dark nose is what makes a koala instantly a koala.

  5. 5 Step five: two round eyes and a small smile added to the face.

Give it two round eyes beside the nose and a tiny smile. Big, wide eyes make it look sweet and curious.

  6. 6 Step six: two short arms added at the front of the body.

Add two short little arms reaching down at the front. Keep them round and stubby, like it's about to give a hug.

  7. 7 Step seven: inner ears, paws, feet and pink cheeks added.

Add the fuzzy inside of the ears, little rounded feet and paw pads, and two soft pink cheeks. These tiny touches make it extra cuddly.

  8. 8 Step eight: the finished koala coloured in soft grey with a cream face and pink cheeks.

Now colour it in! Soft grey fur, a cream tummy and face, a dark grey nose, and rosy pink cheeks. Ta-da — one cuddly koala!

The koala might be the cuddliest animal you can draw — it’s basically a circle with two big fuzzy ears and a friendly nose. The finished koala is up at the top; that’s our goal. Let’s build it one easy shape at a time.

✏️ Before you start

Draw lightly with pencil first. Light lines are easy to erase, so you can make the ears fluffier, move the nose, or fix the smile before you colour it in.

Make it your own

  • Give your koala a little eucalyptus leaf to hold or nibble.
  • Draw it hugging a tree trunk, peeking around the side.
  • Make a sleepy koala by turning the eyes into two closed curved lines.
